The Blacks & Whites Carnival (Carnaval de Negros y Blancos) is a unique cultural festiva held in Pasto, in the southwestern region of Colombia. This UNESCO-recognized event celebrates the region’s rich cultural diversity and history through a series of vibrant parades, music, dance, and traditional games. The carnival is divided into two main days: the «Day of the Blacks» where participants paint their faces black in a gesture of racial unity, and the «Day of the Whites» where everyone covers themselves in white talcum powder. The carnival also features intricate float parades, elaborate costumes, and a festive atmosphere that envelops the entire city.
The Blacks & Whites Carnival takes place from January 2nd to January 7th, making it one of the first major celebrations of the year in Colombia, and a perfect time to experience Pasto’s lively culture.

Barranquilla Carnival

The Barranquilla Carnival is one of Colombia’s most iconic and lively festivals, celebrated annually in February. Recognized by UNESCO for its cultural significance, the carnival blends African, Indigenous, and Spanish traditions in a dazzling display of parades, music, and dance. The event kicks off with the Batalla de Flores (Battle of Flowers), where colorful floats, elaborate costumes, and vibrant performances fill the streets, followed by the Gran Parada, which showcases traditional dances like the Cumbia and Mapalé.

Throughout the four-day celebration, the city comes alive with comparsas (dance troupes), live concerts, and various competitions, culminating in the symbolic burial of «Joselito Carnaval,» marking the end of the festivities. The carnival’s joyful atmosphere attracts both locals and international visitors, making it a must-experience cultural event in Colombia.
